Motivation is fickle
Today was one of those days where I did not feel pumped up.
You ever have one of those days?
Where you feel like you are going uphill ans can’t see the top of the hill?
From the start of the day until now.. I just don’t have the “motivation”.. the fire.. the drive..
But I still made my bed. Made a healthy breakfast. Got to the gym early. Pushed through the workout. Trained my clients..
Now I’m pushing through this blog post.
Energy is lacking.
There’s no excitement..
It’s one of those “park bench” days as coach Dan John says. These are the days you just show up and go through the motions.
These days count. You still get the work done.
You can’t always be at 100% or even 90%. Sometimes you will have to rely on your habits and discipline to get you through it.
That’s why I always stress the importance of habits. When motivation fails you, and it will fail you often, you need to have something else to give you the nudge in the right direction.
Habits are number one. They go hand-in-hand with discipline.
What are some other ways you can give yourself a boost when motivation is non-existent?
Clean out your closet
I know this may sound odd, but one thing that helps me when I am feeling STUCK is to clean out my dresser and/or my dresser.
It doesn’t have to be clothes, it can be your garage, attic, basement etc.. the point is to get rid of some STUFF that no longer serves you.
Whatever you are holding on to that you KNOW you don’t need, pack it up and take it to the goodwill.
That process of getting rid of clutter or extra possessions you don’t use is refreshing and usually gives me a boost in mood.
Walk in the woods
For you guys who have read my blogs in the past, you know my love for nature and the woods.
That’s where I’m headed after I finish this writing.
Taking a brisk walk in the woods is medicine for me. The fresh air, the smell of trees and wildlife, the sounds of birds and other animals..
Get out into nature as often as possible. It’s been a few days for me and I didn’t even realize it until now.
That’s one of the great benefits of writing. Often you learn more about yourself and what is holding you back or needs to be changed.
I encourage everyone to write, even if you don’t share it publicly.
Writing can be a great tool for self-discovery and potentially cathartic.
Final Thoughts
-When motivation is lacking make sure you have good habits to fall back on.
-To give yourself a boost try cleaning out your house and tossing anything that you don’t use anymore. Sounds silly but it works.
-Take a walk in the woods. Move on some uneven terrain, breathe deep in the fresh air.
-Write out your thoughts and concerns. Let it all hang out. It’s liberating.
