3 Benefits of Outdoor Exercise
I’m sure you’ve seen the old pictures of muscle beach in sunny California.
Those dudes were jacked and tan. I can only imagine the energy in that kind of training atmosphere. You would have no trouble getting motivated, that’s for sure.
There’s a power that you get training outdoors that you don’t get inside a climate-controlled gym.
So you should leave the fancy gym and get outside for all your workouts, right?
Maybe not ALL of your training, but there are plenty of benefits to getting outside with your workouts.
Let’s get into the reasons why you want to include outdoor training in your routine.
1- Fresh air
This one is self-explanatory. We all spend too much time indoors. Working in cubicles, laying on the couch watching TV, playing on our phones, video games, sitting in our cars..
In a few decades we’ve gone from spending hours outside each day to rarely getting out.
Most folks are lucky to get in 10,000 steps a day and that used to be considered an average day.
Getting out there in the elements is good for your health, both physical AND mental.
In one study, researchers found that exercising outdoors “was associated with greater feelings of revitalization, increased energy and positive engagement, together with decreases in tension, confusion, anger and depression.”
2- Sunshine
Outdoor exercise is a great way to get the benefits of sunshine, mainly vitamin D.
This is important if you are overweight, as research suggests that people who are overweight are more likely to be deficient in vitamin D.
Plenty of folks where I live are deficient in Vitamin D. (Buffalo, NY)
If you live somewhere that doesn’t get much sunshine, you need to take advantage of those days you DO get some.
3- Feel like a badass
The most important benefit? Doing something badass that not many others even think about doing.
That’s you! The rebel outside.
You take the path LESS traveled.
Get after it when others are “too tired” or still sleeping.
If everyone is inside doing bodybuilding workouts on machines, you are out there in the park doing pullups on the monkey bars and hill sprints.
You gotta follow your own path.
That path should be outside at least a few days a month.
