I used to skateboard and I was not good at it

Back in my teens I was a skater.

I was not very good at it, which made me feel like an outsider within a group of outsiders.

That period of my life taught me a great lesson.

You can’t be good at everything but sometimes you gotta try at things you suck at,

When I first started on the skateboard it was a challenge just trying to not fall off.

The other guys were doing crazy tricks, flips and jumps.

I just wanted to do the basic ollie.

It was a struggle for me. Skating never came natural and my body felt uncoordinated even though I had played a bunch of sports in my youth.

There were many times I slammed my board down against the ground disgusted with myself.

Why did it seem so easy for those other kids but I had to fight so hard to master the simplest trick?

That was a good life lesson for me.

Maybe you’ve experienced that too.

When you really want to go after something but you suck at it.

Do you quit and just go back to what you’re good at? Or do you attack it with all that you have and embrace the struggles?

Many people will say just go ALL-IN 100% on your strengths, and I understand where they’re coming from.

Others will say you have to find your weakness and attack it.

Who is right?

Both.

Like many questions in the fitness world, the answer is, IT DEPENDS.

You want to embrace your strengths and also attack your weakness. They can co-exist within you.

When you do what you are good at, it feels empowering. On the flip side, when you face your weakness, you may be frustrated at first but as you make progress, the benefits are even greater.

In life and in your training, you can have a little bit of both.

Enjoy your strengths, and endure your struggles.
