I've done a lot of crazy things with my training. In over two decades you try out a few ideas. Some stick, some don't. There are some that serve a purpose only for a short while.
When I first started training I did pushups and curls in my bedroom in maybe 7th or 8th grade. I wanted to have bigger muscles to push back against a couple kids that messed with me. That was motivation enough to do something hard and uncomfortable.
But I'll tell ya this, seeing my body change through exercise got me intrigued. I wasn't quite hooked yet but the seed was planted.
Looking back, what allowed me to try so many different programs, ideas, techniques, methods was because I built a strong foundation.. Everything else comes from that base.
If you don't build that foundation first, you will run into problems sooner rather than later. The foundation is simple and by it's nature, people overlook it and overcomplicate things.
The foundation of total body strength sets the stage for everything else. You can take it any direction you choose. For me that meant trying out all kinds of intense training styles and plans. I took notes through it all. Most of those notes will be a part of my next big fitness book. Not sure what it's going to be called or what its exactly "about" yet but it's moving along.
So when you are deciding what to do next with your training, often it depends on a few factors, one of them is if you built the foundation or not.
Another factor is what you are currently doing. What's going on in your body? What do you want to achieve? Short-term/long-term etc..
But in the big picture, what matters most is right now. What is your strongest desire. Where you think of it and it excites you. Makes you feel alive.
That's where it's at.
Not the perfect routine or diet.
What inspires you? What gets you to jump out of bed?
The answer might be the key to alignment in your life.
