Training in the Morning/Chasing the Impossible/High Volume Programs

Early to Rise

The gym opens at 7 a.m. on the weekends.

Why go so early?

-To start the day strong

-Win the first battle of the morning

-Avoid distractions

-Never put off until later what you can do NOW

Whenever someone asks me what is the best time to workout, I always say "the time you will actually DO IT."

But if you have an option, I'd go with the mornings.

If you wait until later, it's more likely you will skip your training, as other responsibilities come up. (or fatigue, laziness etc..)

Crank UP the Volume

My training this morning was the Press and pullups.

Lots of volume.

People often get confused by volume. It's not just high-rep sets.

There are a lot of reps in a high-volume program but they can come in different packages.

Some of the most popular high-volume programs are the German Volume Training program, Gironda's 8x8, Pavel T's Russian Bear program.

I'm working on increasing my high-volume days to the Russian Bear standard (20 sets of 5 reps)

Pull-ups respond well to many sub-maximal sets.

Today, I did 10 sets of 5 reps.

If your max set of pullups is 5 reps, you would do a bunch of sets of 2-3 reps.

Leave a little "in the tank" to get in more sets.

More work= more progress in this case.

Chasing the IMPOSSIBLE

I've been reading about HUGE accomplishments lately.

Often the best stories of overcoming odds come from folks who were down and out and didn't believe they could accomplish much of anything.

They turned it around by having faith that they could succeed, and took action aligned with that self-belief.

I have my mind set on some big achievements and it's scary and exhilarating at the same time.

Never let anyone tell you what you CAN or CAN'T do.

Even yourself!

We all have limits we place on ourselves. It's time to break through them.

Think of one crazy thing you would LOVE to do but you feel like it's impossible for you...

Write it down.

Let it simmer awhile..

Now it's time to start moving towards that BIG CRAZY goal.

The reward is in the process, the journey.

It's not even about finishing a triathlon, for example.

What is important is to start. To believe you CAN.

Begin training hard for it.

SHOW UP.

Give your ALL.

You'll be amazed at what you can accomplish if you do.
